The Party of the Radical Left was founded in 2020 as a party that fights for a socialist society based on equality, solidarity, freedom, democracy, internationalism, anti-imperialism, and anti-fascism, a society where people are more important than profit. We advocate for Serbia as a secular republic in which dignified work free from exploitation, a roof over one’s head, healthy food and environment, free healthcare and education, gender equality, and minority rights are guaranteed.
The Party of the Radical Left follows the Social Democratic Union, which was founded in 1996 as a left-wing, opposition, democratic, anti-nationalist, and pro-European party. In recent years, the membership and leadership of the Social Democratic Union have recognized the growing need for a radical left shift, bringing together various left-wing forces across the country, workers, students, activists in the fight for a roof over their heads, natural resources, workers’ rights, and free education. The process of unification intensified after the Social Democratic Union’s call for unity among left-wing forces in 2018. In 2019, the membership of the SDU, along with DiEM25 and the former Left Summit of Serbia, took further steps to build the first serious left-wing party in Serbia after thirty years. In September 2020, the Congress adopted the name Party of the Radical Left, a new program, and elected a new leadership.
Aiming for parliamentary struggle, the party relies on field experience gained in factories and on the streets, on years of acquired knowledge, direct contact with the oppressed people, and cooperation with professional organizations in the comprehensive fight for a more just society.
